Very interesting! Coincidentally, the NY Times featured a long and informative article by Ken Druse about Mrs Ely and her Vernon NJ garden, which is still maintained by its current owners, on June 24, 2004.

i read that book awhile back, i highly recommed it if just to compare how times have changed. i got a hoot when she refered to "her man" as in her hired man, doing all the heavy work in the garden. what i wouldn't give to have a couple of hired men to clean up my yard every spring and fall. this was a woman who took her gardens seriously. her personality comes through and you feel like you are a friend when you finish. how many of us read a garden book like i do: read a paragraph, dream a few minutes, read another half page, mentally apply it to my yard, read a chapter and have a gardening revolation, i guess thats why it takes me so long to read a good garden book

Looks to be a fun read, stashed in the favorites for the near(?) future. No time now!! The temperate rain forest is living up to its name this year and is a non stop maintenance nightmare. Job security 8>))

No thanks here John. I read the whole thing and didn't get out in the garden like I should have.

It was worth it though. It took me back to a different time and place. Aaah, to be rich with all that help.
