optimum bottom heat temperature?

Hi to all, I made the 'bottom-heat-box' that I mentioned in the 'picture of Hawaiii cutting etc' posting and used the smallest rated bulb we had at the time,(15watts)and left it switched on for half an hour or so this afternoon. I had put a thermometer inside and when I checked it, it had reached....120degrees!! WAY too hot methinks! We will get a smaller wattage bulb asap and try again.

Meanwhile, any suggestions on the optimum bottom heat for giving my new Hawaii plumie a boost as I am struggling to give it a constant temperature these days.....and we do have this 'competition' on at the moment!!!

Between 80 to 85 degrees sounds optimal to me.

Agree with Tony. You want to keep the soil at about 80F.

I agree with the general consensus of 80 degrees. However I would suggest you use a heating pad to achieve this. Either a regular heating pad or one of the ones specially designed to provide bottom heat for plants.

Hi Greenclaws

I have a 6" flourescent bulb in my kitchen that I keep on at night. Can I use that for one of my plumies this winter and keepit growing, or am I being silly. Also forgot to mention the bulb is over my kitchen counter so the plumie will be very close in proximity to it.

Ignore my other message in the interim I got loads of info. from Bill which I understand and will be able to figure out how to put a unit in.

Also my hubby made a mistake he told me the flourescent bulb was 6" it's 2', he guessed without looking. If the flourescent bulb doesn't do the trick I'm going to purchase a unit. Have to wait and see. Talk to you soon with another ques.I'm sure.
