Try bag rooting. I've had great success bagging my cuttings. Dip in hormone powder and bag in lightly moistened cactus mix (sandwich bag tied with a rubber band). After bagging I placed them in a second floor bedroom which stays warm and undisturbed. I check on the bagged cuttings every month. By the end of second month I usually see roots. I started 6 cuttings beginning of August and its end of Sept now and 4 have very impressive roots already. My delima is to pot them or keep them bagged through the California winter. I hate to pot them now only to lose them through frost in the coming months. I'm going with keeping them bagged.

I have tried bagging and agree it is pretty easy and it works well. The problem l have is when to remove the baggie and repotting cutting without damaging fragile roots. Waiting too long to un-bag risks rotting roots; too soon and you lose new easily broken roots. Starting cutting in a pot takes a little longer but it eliminates my having to guess at the right un-bagging timing.
