I do not have either of the roses you are asking about so I looked them up in HMF to get an idea of the mature size. Overnight Scentsation according to HMF can get about 3' and Sweet Chariot is smaller that stays about 2'.

That size container is too small and I would not plant them in the same container at all as that is really planting them too close together in a restricted area. The pot size you have should be good for Sweet Chariot. But you may want to get a 18" dia container for Overnight S. My larger minis and minifloras do great in the 18" dia containers. Just make sure any container you use has good drainage.

You can plant roses close together in the ground where they have room to spread but in a container the will eventually crowd each other out and not thrive.

Thanks Liz. That's what I was afraid of. Should I try to transplant them now or wait till it warms up some in March? My idea was to have an upright grow in the back of the pot and a spreading and cascading plant in the front. Also when I planted them in that pot they both were very small bands but they grew and filled out quite quickly.

I would think March should be good for where you live. But hopefully someone in your zone will chime in here as well. If I have to repot during the winter I usually just pick a sunny day when the temps are above freezing. But then again I keep my container rose outside all winter long.
Instead of planting 2 roses in the same conatainer, may I suggest planting a cascading plant such as creeping thyme, oregano, or other similar shallower rooting plant that will not compete with the rose. I am sure your local garden center can give you some great ideas.

In Missouri we can still get a freeze until about the middle of April. If you are talking about planting them in the container and putting them outside, I would wait until then. Remember the Easter freeze we had two or three years ago? If you have newly planted roses and a freeze like that hits, you could lose them.

Thanks for the suggestion Liz. Sounds like a good one. I'm overwintering roses in the garage. I won't bring them out to stay for another couple of months. Maybe just during the day. Would it be alright to re-pot and just leave them in the garage for now?

Sorry for not getting back to you soone, but I was having problems logging into GW. I would think it would be alright to repot now. If you do it right the rose will not know what even happened.

Thanks Liz. I'll try it now. I'm going to try keeping just a few minis in pots because this overwintering thing is a bit much. I've got close to 30 pots lined up next to the car in our tiny garage. I have to scoot side-ways to get to the car door. lol.

Thanks Phil for your advice. I really appreciate responses from gardeners in my own region. I'm in Sedalia and this is just our 2nd winter in MO. I'm familiar with the climate but it's the first time I've tried to grow anything here and I can use all the good advice I can get.:)

i have had two sweet chariots in containers and they can get quite large and trailing. they do well in hanging baskets though and are as tough as they come. the smell makes it all worth while...

I have both of these roses. I think sweet chariot grows wider than it does tall -- a very nice quality, but as everyone else has said, perhaps not the best when in the same pot with Overnight Scentsation. Both are great roses!! Hope you've got them moved to good places,now that it is May. We are getting snow today in Wisconsin! yes, the day before mother's day....

I did move OS to it's own pot. Sweet Chariot is growing like gangbusters and OS is just now starting to show a little vigor. It has several blooms on it as I type. I did have to spray for black spot. All my minis had it bad, early. Even the ones that are said to be disease resistant. Must be a bad year for it. =-(

I am so glad your roses made it through the winter. I almost lost a miniflora and a floribunda to the unusual harsh winter we went through here. Yes, BS was bad for me too. I think is was the very cold winter and then all the rain in the spring.
