My new Trellises

DH built me some lovely trellises today. I'd been planning this for a while but we never got around to it. A few weeks ago he put in the main posts and added the concrete etc. Today he built the trellises to go on them. I totally love how they look and am very excited to now plant my climbers and have them grow beautifully.

Here are some pictures - the last two he did are my favourites, he used some wood from other projects that were curved and made it look so pretty, don't have any pictures of those two though, maybe I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post.

Busy building

Installing ...

Posts waiting for some trellises - the two pretty one's he made went in here ... some roses soaking waiting for spots in the front yard - we're digging up more lawn!!

Bella saying Hi - she's been very busy making sure daddy was doing it all right - lol

That looks terrific Aprille, your roses are going to look great on them. Your roses all look pretty good too. I can't believe how big Bella is now, they don't still little long do they?:)

I have DH putting up the vinyl lattice along the middle section of the back fence. Mainly as a screen because the neighbors behind me put up a tall swing set where they can stand up top and look over. Bonus will be the extra area to tie the climbers to besides the metal trellis' already in place. I like yours better.

WOW!! I really like them.Going to look great with the roses on them. Please post pictures after the roses are growing on them...Wish my back would allow me to get out there and build some sturdy trellis.I built two several years ago with the help of a friend.

Aprille is it okay if I borrow your hubby for a weekend.lol
    They look mighty fine
Something I have been begging my husband to do for me for the last few years.
But then again I have to beg him just to put the ones up from Home Depot.
    Lucky You.

BTW- I can't wait to see your roses climbing up their lovely home.

Ooh, I love the one on the right with the diagonals. Such a great design. Can't wait to see your roses on them. Bet you can't either. What climbers will grow on them?

Thanks all - I'm a lucky girl :o) DH does indulge me in my addiction! lol the guy sure knows the way to this girls heart!

Kathy your pictures from last year of your trellises is what inspired me to do this. I've got way too many climbers though and not enough space, don't know how I'm going to do this - do you think it's ok to have canes intertwine? Like if I plant them a bit close together to make more room for more roses?

The climbers that I have are:
    Alchymist (once bloomer)
    Ash Wednesday (once bloomer)
    Bouquet d'Or
    Butterscotch
Cinderella Fairy Tale (trying to figure if it's a tall shrub or climber)
    Dixieland Linda
    Harlequin
    Morning Greeting
    Ginger Syllabub
    Ohio Belle
    Opal Brunner
    Reve d'Or
    Senegal
    William Allan Richardson

I'm wondering if I should mix the colours or plant same colours together? I kind of like the mixed look .. and it might look pretty if I plant them close together, on the other hand it might also work to have same colours together and plant closer ... decisions, decisions, decisions!!

oh and here are the last couple he made that I could not take pictures of - as you might notice, he used some left over trellises in the design

and another of Bella cuddling with Daniella this morning ...

Aprille, I can't wait to see those climbers, all different than mine! I don't see why they couldn't mix into each other on the edges. I have America and Pearly Gates on the same trellis and hope to get them intertwining soon. They have clematis growing through them, but, dang, the clematis blooms earlier than the roses. Hope to see those climbers soon. When does your bloom start?
Oh, and I just love those trellises especially the rectangular one with the bought trellis in the center. Your yard will be a riot of colors.

Aprille, you are one lucky girl! My dh is not the kind to build rosey structures. They are great. Your daughter and Bella are adorable.

Aprille you are a lucky girl. My DH will build a few things but its like pulling teeth sometimes. I can't wait to see all your beauties in full bloom this summer. Daniella and Bella are a beautiful site to see. Is that a lemon tree in your next to the last picture?? Judy

Your DH is a gem! He did a great job. Does he dig planting holes too? ;^)

Oh how nice I am also going to build some trellises one of these coming weeks, for a client. It is really hard to get the cedar wood here. I bet you are looking forward to downsizing your pot ghetto!

DH is blushing - he certainly appreciates all the kind comments. And he says it was very kind of me not to mention how long I've been bugging him to do this for me! lol

Judy - yes that is a lemon tree, it's loaded to the ground with lemons right now and I have to beg the neighbours to come take some - problem is everyone seems to have a lemon tree in their yard around here!

hoovb - he digs when asked to. The only problem is I don't have the patience to wait for the weekend so I do most of the digging myself. Takes me 3 times as long to dig one hole as it does him! Though he's been promising to dig up some of the front lawn so I can plant a few more roses in the ground. It's going to be another big project, as we have heavy clay soil and I want to do it right this time.

Niels - good luck with getting the wood and building the trellises. I'm certainly looking forward to downsizing the pot ghetto - though I've come up on a problem now. Our dog is now able to get into the flower bed with the pots disappearing from the front of the beds. When we got her, I lined up the pots all around the back beds to she will not be able to get in, now with all the planting that's happening more spaces are opening up and she just loves to go sit in the beds. The other issue is that she thinks she's this itty bitty thing - not a hulking 150# dog who can kill a rose by sitting on it!!! lol

Aprille-----Your doggie reminds me very much of a dog I had when I was a young girl---His name was Shep----I loved that dog----and that is a great picture with your little girl--

Aprille I have some spots with alot of clay in them too around where I am planning on planing some of my new roses. I dug quite a big whole and filled in with better dirt and peat moss but what do you add to your soil to ammend it? Thanks, Judy

Judy, I usually mix the clay soil with some compost and it seems to work fine for me ... I recently discovered that our local composting facility is about 1 mile from where we live! Plan on borrowing the neighbours truck (buying a truck for this sort of thing is on our list of things we want) and going down there and getting some compost to add the the bed. I want to do a raised bed, so we'll try and take out about 1-2 feet of clay and then add another foot of raised bed and add the compost to that - hope it works! It's all a learning experience.

Thanks Aprille, I will keep mixing in my compost and hope everything comes out ok. Judy
