I am not sure. I have found a few that attacked my sweet 100 cherry tomatoes. I squished them, and threw them over the fence into the dirt to be removed by the DOT for freeway expansion.

The weather could be a variable. But you could also have a bunch of wasps that have taken up residence. If so they would get to the worms before the worms get to you. Hope it is so.

Aw, don't call them horned devils. :-) They turn into such lovely moths. I haven't seen many either. Only one I've seen this year, I found some droppings awhile back but couldn't find him. Few days later I went out to find a huge caterpillar eating a fruit off my hab and the plant was completely and totally defoliated. Yeah, I am a horrible person, I squished him. Should have given him to my friend's son to raise.

I've seen evidence of hornworms on one of my tomatoes but can't find anything. I did, however, pull another enormous index finger sized hornworm off of one of my Padron plants yesterday. HUGE! That's the second really large one on my Padrons. Those poor peppers went from being insanely healthy and producing like mad to bacterial spot to making a great recovery and now hornworms. *sigh*

The best help I've had controlling hornworms is trellising my tomatoes on a chainlink fence- the birds do an excellent job of patrolling the vines and getting the nasty caterpillars for me. From the tomatoes they work over to the peppers and take care of business over there for the most part... other than my poor Padrons.... which happen to be our absolute favorite. Isn't that always the way?!!?

I had 4 almost destroy my Pumpkin Pepper plant but removed and dispatched all hornworms and BT sprayed the plant awhile back. No more. Pam is right, it is an absolutely beautiful moth! *sigh*

I've killed 8 this year.

Found 3 on my sister's Thai chile last week....they pretty much ate every leaf.
