creeping thyme-- Thymus praecox would be lovely and should work in your zone, I think.

I also think wild violets/ pansy as long as they don't over crowd

tkhooper - so any allium repels spiders? Because if that's the case I'm going to plant a lot more allium. Hah.

How about another Mini rose?? I have mine on 18" centers. They do good!

I got my red planted with Swiss chard.

Prunella grandiflora can be grown from seed, blooms a long time, stays short, and you can find it in blue/purple shades which will compliment virtually any rose color.
