Cherry, Canada Red (Chokecherry)

I'm considering planting a Chokecherry (or at least I think it's chokecherry - that's what a google search is telling me it is- Here's the description.

CHERRY, CANADA RED (Prunus virginiana ÂCanada RedÂ) Ht 20-25 ft, Spd. 18-20 ft. Full sun to part shade. Low to moderate water needs. New growth is bright green, turning to burgundy-red as the leaves mature. White flowers in 3"-6" long drooping racemes appear mid-spring followed by small ¼" dark purple fruit. Fast growing plant that can provide a quick screen and attracts birds. Easiest to use as a shrub unless suckers are maintained while the tree is young.

I'm considering putting it in my front yard - not near the driveway or walkway, near the southwest corner of the yard (by the street). Currently, my neighbor has a group of Austrees nearby but he's talking about taking them out. I'm looking to plant this to eventually replace those trees.

I'm wondering how badly the cherries sucker. I plan to grow it as a tree rather than shrub. I think we may have had a couple mature chokecherries at out house in Alaska (not positive though). We had one that had a lot of suckers but I don't know how long it took to get that way (there when we bought the house). Once we took out the suckers, the tree looked really nice. DH thinks it wasn't hard to control them after that but since the roots were very near the surface it was hard to mow around. If I get it, it would be planted in my front lawn.

Are chokecherries the white flowereing trees that are blooming about now that smell so sweet (downtown COS smelled really nice last week when I was out there).

Any advice?

Thanks!
