Roses make lousy house plants! They really hate being inside because there is too little light and humidity. These little grocery store minis are actually produced to be disposable. But they don't have to be!

What's probably happening is your rose is slowing down due to less light. You're in NY and it's getting cold and the daylight hours have gotten much shorter. The rose is trying to go dormant but inside the house it is too warm for that to really happen. The other problem with roses inside is that there is too little humidity in your house for the rose. You can try and make the rose happier by putting it under lights and raising the humidity up around it by placing a tray of water next to it or you can let it go dormant for the winter by putting it outside in an unheated garage, on a shelf, and water it once a month all winter. In the spring, when the days get longer, it should start to grow again.

If it's still in its original pot you should put it in a larger pot next spring and put it outside in full sun. It can also be planted in the ground. Either way it will be much happier outside!

Thank you for your response. All things considered, I think I'll take your advice and place it in the garage. I've always liked roses and was hoping to try my hand at cultivating them now that I've retired. Unfortunately, most plants I've tried to care for seem to die, which is why I tried the supermarket rose first. If I can keep it alive, I'll try some other miniatures.

If outside I think you'll find that roses are actually pretty tough survivors. There a thousands of roses growing in abandoned homesteads with absolutely no care what so ever. If you plant it, it should thrive!

From reading about these little guys. I found some are hardy to zone5. They are treated with growth retardant hormones and if planted outside most well grow larger. One thing I see is that your pot looks very small. Since they come up to six in a pot they may be root bound. I agree roses make lousy house plants. If indoors they must never be allowed to dry out. Watering from the bottom up is better than watering from the top. They also seem to recommend bright indirect light. Don't know about that thou. Seems odd for a rose not too need at least a grow bulb.
