Rain!!!

It's raining here, YEA. The ground is SO very dry. It just started a few minutes ago. I had to bring in the dogs cuz nothing smells worse than wet dog (maybe wet skunk??) The sky is really dark toward Springs and I hear Denver is getting snow.

I'm happy to have the moisture, that means this weekend I get to dig some more, YIPPIE.

Been snowing like mad here for almost 2 hours. The crabapple trees aren't likeing that.

It's sad to look out the front window at my roses (that had begun to bud) with an inch of heavy wet snow on them.

I was out running the weedeater/tiller attachment to mix fertilizer in the beds, yesterday. I'm raising quite a bit of dust because the ground has really dried out. It began to snow.

These were like those ice particles nearly hail but it doesn't bounce. It snows harder and the dust settles. I'm going as fast as I can around the beds with the tiller . . .

The ground is becoming covered with ice . . . Flying around the last bed and heading for shelter, the world has gone grey with dense ice falling from the sky. The ground is covered in white.

I slide to the pickup door with a quarter inch of ice frozen to my hat. I'm joined by DW. What has she been up to? She's been going around the veggie garden watering transplanted bok choy & lettuce!

It's about 45 degrees and the snow is melting on the ground. With very limited visibility, we head off down the road. There's street flooding at the intersections. Four miles away, we arrive home. It hasn't rained, snowed, hailed a drop. The sun is shining so I start the lawnmower and mow the lawn as the ice melts off my hat.

digit - funny how the urgency in your typing makes people read faster, trying to help you hurry ;-)

Well, now its snow. Everything is covered. My red truck is white. I hope it sticks around and melts where it fell. Kid is supposed to have a baseball game later today, wonder if they will cancel it.

8 - 16 inches of snow forecast for the northern San Juans. 21º forecast for tonight. Windy, snow flurries here, and I just lit the fire. They're pouring water down the irrigation ditches now that the runoff has started, and my yard is beginning to take on its usual summer condition of imitating a Mekong Delta rice paddy splurg splurg splurg as I walk around. Ice all around from everyone doing side roll spray irrigation in the fields.

"These were like those ice particles nearly hail but it doesn't bounce."

Are you talking about graupel? I never knew that had a name of its own until I read the book "The Children's Blizzard".

We got maybe 48 flakes, but strong wind, and I dunno how cold it got last night, but cold enough to fry dandelions and roses and wilt clematis, but not tulips and daffodils.

Lots of wind Wednesday (garbage day, of course, LOL), which brought in some rain, which turned to about 1/2" snow overnight. Yesterday, the high was in the 30's with flurries off and on, and today it won't make it out of the 40's. What I'm really concerned about is the low tonight, which is predicted to be 23 degrees. May have to take some precautionary measures in the garden.

At least it is supposed to warm up this weekend. My order from Bluestone arrived yesterday, and I am ready to do some digging!

    Graupel - - that's it BP!

I remember a "special kind of snow" was mentioned on this forum once but couldn't remember what it was supposed to be or who had said something about it. That was you, BP!

We were discussing Utah license plates or something highly horticultural - wasn't it?

I don't remember what the other discussion was about, but if graupel came up, I was likely the one who mentioned it. I remember wondering why that snow looked so different even as a kid, so when I saw it had its own name, I was determined to remember it (I also have to admit that it's fun to watch expressions on people's faces when I mention that I had graupel yesterday afternoon; almost as much fun as telling somebody I replaced my shoelaces because I can't stand it when the aglets wear out).

Probably about 20 minutes after I started this thing, the rain turned to snow. I had about 1" in 30 minutes, then the sun came out for 45 minutes or so. Then more clouds and lots of wind, but no more snow, rain or graupel, which came just before the rain. Everything got wet, but it was not enough to wash the truck. Welcome to Colorado, if you don't like the weather wait 20 minutes sure was true yesterday. I was afraid to post anything else it was doing for fear it might decide to start hailing next.

bp- I bought a pair of sneakers with metal aglets for $15 brand new. The shoes are about junk, but I an thinking of saving the laces, cuz with them, I clank when I walk. It drives my daugher nuts, SWEET REVENGE (insert evil laughter here).

Billie--Here is a link to a page where a guy discusses aglet repair. One of the repairs uses metal tubing. So now you can make all your laces clank when you walk.

When I was little, my dad would repair our shoelace-aglets with glue. I don't know why it was fun, it just was.
And, on another odd OT note, we get tons of graupel up here but it is very fine, certainly finer than the measurement guidelines provided by wikipedia. I wonder if it really is graupel?
I forgot over winter how fun this place is!
