I have containers of aging horse manure + coffee grinds aging, and it's full of worms. I just can't see how too much manure or compost would stop worms?

BTW, Worms LOVE coffee grinds, something you should easily be able to find in Seattle.

What do you mean by "My soil is very thick"? How is drainage? Any chance they are drowning in your soil?

No, I do not think they are drowning..Well, it is just heavy soil. Perhaps I still need more stuff in there..More compost. I can get some coffee grounds from Starbucks. I have not done that yet. What about some mushroom compost?

I dunno about mushroom compost, never used it as I believe in using recycled stuff as much as possible. Coffee grinds, manure, sometimes newspaper, and then woodchips on top.

Is your soil compacted? Do you use any chemicals?

I am mystified that you would not have worms in Seattle (I used to live near Redmond). Seems like conditions would be ideal.

You know, I re-read my first sentence above and it sounds preachy about recycling. I really didn't mean it that way - I don't buy much bagged stuff to use in the garden because the free/recycled stuff seems to meet my needs, and I do enjoy being able to recycle. Hopefully that doesn't sound as uppity.
