Pepper ID?

I'm pretty certain this came out of a pack of sweet bells labeled "Sweet Pepper Gourmet Rainbow Mix" from RHShumway's. http://www.rhshumway.com/dp.asp?pID=03158&c=129&p=Sweet+Pepper+Gourmet+Rainbow+Mix

At first I assumed it must be the Ivory, but it's not really a bell, grows pointing upward, and is hot. Sorta smells, tastes like a Jalapeno to me.

I have no idea how hard it is to ID a pepper but thought I'd ask anyway.

Thanks.

Whatever it is, I like it. You say you started it from seed? Any others?

    No others.

When I tried to describe it to lady at Home Depot she said the only peppers she knew of that grew pointed up like that were ornamental peppers and I shouldn't eat them. I got the feeling she didn't really knew though. Myself, I know next to nothing about peppers, especially hot.

The only hot peppers I've ever grown were jalepeno, cayenne, habanero, and poblano and I know it's none of those.

I started it in a pot of used soil last... I don't remember, probably in the Spring. If I remember correctly, I put several seeds from the packet(RHShumway, link in first post), in the pot and only this one came up. I was getting poor germination even before which is why I think I just went ahead and dumped the rest of the seeds into this pot. Eventually I stuck it in the ground.

I suppose it's possible it was a stray seed already in the soil but I doubt it because I've never grown anything like it before.

Truthfully, other than using them in chili or on pizza, I don't use many hot peppers.

I wouldn't think there would be any reason not to eat them though would there?

Nonsense . Not so. There isn't a cultivar of peppers called "Ornamental"
The name ornamental is just an appearance description . Normally poking upward, small, colorful ....

The only explanation that why "ornamental" peppers might not be edible is that (maybe) some growers use harsh pesticide on them, Even then, the effect of pesticide is not going to last for ever. Also, pepper plants are some of the disease resistance plants that I know of. Why they would want to spray them with harsh chemicals ??

Thanks, good to know. I can exclude "harsh chemicals" since I started it from seed.

My totally wild guess is that perhaps it was supposed to have been an ivory bell but had gotten crossed with something hot? At the breeders I mean, before I even bought them. And if I save seeds they probably won't run true?

Oh well, I'll save some anyways. :)

    No chiles are poisonous.
