I adore old roses--was out walking today and noticed reddish orange hips on my 'Honorine de Brabrant', 'Reine of Violettes' and 'Madame Isaac Pereire'. I'm too chicken to attempt cuttings but I'm willing to collect hips ;-)

So experts, can I collect the hips now and wintersow the seeds? If the answer is YES (fingers crossed), do I remove the seeds from the hip before sowing? And I 'd like to know if I get stratification "credit" for leaving the hip attached to the plant--in other words, have I been more or less wintersowing the seeds already?

Also, is it correct to immediately cold/moist stratify any hips you do collect to prevent desiccation? I think i read that rose seeds lose viability quickly if stored dry. Can you verify this for me, please?
