It can be either left-over energy or a sign that it is rooting. I don't look at it as a bad sign, because as long as the cutting is green there is hope. Some people pick the new growth off. I don't unless they look like they are growing wilty or moldy. But I only leave about four leaves on my cuttings when I start them so I feel like the new growth helps... Sorry, it was not an easy answer....

Thank you, countrygirl_sc. your reply is helpful. My first cutting (of one month ) started growing new leaves, so I wondered if I should be happy or not. I guess I have to wait longer for positive clues that it has rooted.

If it is still green after a month, then that is a good sign. I start mine in little peat pots so I can see the roots come out the bottom or in clear plastic cups so I can see the roots. It is very exciting to know you have been succesful and I am impatient! So I check them daily for roots.

Very early new growth, 1-2 weeks, the cutting may just be showing top growth, and not necessarily rooted. I leave the growth on. If the growth is still going after a month, then it's probably rooted, especially if the growth is steady. If the growth is slowing down, and stopped, probably there are no roots. After about a month you can gently twist or pull the stem to try by feel whether it has rooted. Paul Mozarowski.
