Which Rose rooting medium to use?

I have 13th rose cuttings that I would like to root and I was just trying to figure out which meduim I should use to root the cuttings. I was going to use peat moss but I have heard that that could be a bad idea. Some people suggest that I mix the peat moss with sand. I live in the middle of nowhere and no stores within an hour of me sale sand. Would gravel from my creek be okay to mix with the peat moss or would it be better to just use peat moss or should I considered an entirely new medium? Sorry about all the questions but I really need help cause I have know idea what I'm doing!!!
