keeping pepper seeds

A friend brought a red savannah habanero that he grew to work for me yesterday and i decided to take some seeds from it before i ate it. He's been on a mission to make me take a beating from a pepper, I previously brought dried bhut jolokias and didn't die so he thought they were duds and that his red savannah would do the trick..... It didn't though. But it was very delicous and a perfect looking pod and i would like to grow some my self. I put the seeds out in a single layer to air dry. Is the correct way to do it or should i do something else? How long should i leave them out before i bag them? thanks in advance.

You are on the right track. Make sure the seeds are clean then just let them dry like that for a week or so. Then store them in an envelope in a cool dark place until next spring.

Bring fresh and he just might.

Unless your friend grew the Red Savina in isolation or had properly bagged the blossoms in question, there is always that chance that the perfect pepper you saved seeds from won't reproduce exactly. My advice- plant several of the seeds in case there was an un-intentional cross, then pick the one you like the most to bag and save seeds from to continue that line.

Yes leave them in a dry spot for at least a week, if you're not positive they are dry, leave them for another week. Just so we're all on the same page, are you talking about the Red Savannah pepper or the red savina?

I've had a lot of success growing seeds that I harvested from my own peps and pods from nearby farms. They are open pollinated but I haven't noticed any crosses yet. It is a rare occasion.

@peppermiester I put the wrong word in original post sorry about that! It's red savina habenero(up to 500000 shu).. my bad. @rockguy He had 2 plants and they didn't produce all summer so he brought them inside in Sept and got some pods out of it.. so they were isolated at that point.. I had the first ripe one off the plant. @DMforcier I've yet to have a fresh bhut and I know it won't be pretty. No where to get one around here, I tried growing my own this year but got completely wrong seeds so I have to wait till next season.
Thanks all will keep out for a couple weeks.

    bberkmor,
Where in Canada are you located? I know of a couple of shops that have Bhut's in the Toronto/GTA area.

    Check out Starsky Fine Foods
    685 Queenston Rd., Hamilton.

The Starsky local to me sells fresh "Ghost Peppers" once in a while.

Also, take a gander in the local garden centres, If they had plants that did not sell, they might sell the fruit that it bore.

northern_hab: Would you mind sharing where in the GTA you can find shops that sell those super hots? Now I'm extra intrigued! Thanks!
