Hi chuck,

So which one did you buy, Tecoma stans or Tecoma alata? These are two different plants.
Tecomaria has been sunk into Tecoma and the Cape Honeysuckle is now Tecoma capensis, although some authors find this questionable.

T.alata is of garden origin, T.capensis is indigenous to the summer rainfall region of South Africa, and T.stans is fron Central and South America and a DECLARED WEED (category I) in SA. Easy to see why, I removed this tree from my garden 6 years ago when it was still young, now I am still pulling up dozens and dozens of seedlings every year!

I know what you mean by tecomaria's invasive nature. I hired a guy to "de-jungle" my side yard which had cape plumbango, bouganvilla, "tecomaria" and oleanders growing in a tangled heap,(planted by the previous owners) but I see there are plumangos and tecomarias poking their noses out of the soil.
