Then and Now

17 years ago

Well, we have entered into August-type weather already here.....upper 90's every day and NO rain for the lower part of the state. My blooms are all fryin' and dryin' (and so is everything else) so I thought I would post a "then and now" series of photos of my yard from early spring until early June (before the heat wave started).

Mexican Plum, blooming - late Feb/early March. Pink phlox blooming also.

Mexican Plum - early June. Memorial Day roses waving above shrubbery to the far left, Knockout in the shade and there is a new bed of Hermosa and Baby Faurax (everything is still small). Also, that is NOT one fat little dog walking; that is actually TWO little dogs walking exactly side by side to just look like one little fattie.......

Mexican Plum blooming, early Feb./early March (other side.) Carefree Beauty in front of the column.

Same view, early June. Carefree Beauty beginning her second flush of blooms.

Partial shot of front beds - early March. Honey Perfume blooming in the background.

Same shot (mostly!) early June. The salvia has gotten very large. You can see the Memorial Day roses blooming past the Honey Perfume (smidgen of yellow!)

Partial backyard shot, early March. Old Blush blooming with a scraggly Hansa to the right of it.

Early June....it's hard to tell what's in there! Europeana in front of fountain.

Another angle (included in there are Julia Child, FJ Lindeheimer and Lyda Rose) and a potted Penelope.

Here are some general rose shots, including many of my babies!

BABY FAURAX

{{gwi:1250817}}

DISTANT THUNDER (I have high hopes for this one and it's cousin Distant Drums)

{{gwi:1250819}}

An oldie, but goodie, Europeana. This one does very well for me.

{{gwi:1250821}}

HEAVEN ON EARTH (my latest favorite!)

{{gwi:1250823}}

HERMOSA (love the cute little flowers and this one does not need spraying)

{{gwi:1250825}}

MAGENTA (the color is divine!)

{{gwi:1250827}}

SOUVENIR DE LA MALMAISON AND MAGENTA

{{gwi:320594}}

MEMORIAL DAY (can you say "thrip magnet?") so no closeups of this one!

OLD PORT (a baby)

PAUL NEYRON in a pot - beautiful large blooms and heavenly scent but I just wish the blooms weren't produced at the end of long, waving stalks. I guess some strategic pruning is in order.

RIPPLES (like Blueberry Hill but not quite as good, IMHO)

So the last shot is not of a rose but a zinnia that I absolutely love. It's a new variety from Burpee called White Wedding. I grew them from seed and they are low growing and produce huge white flowers.

Thanks for looking (is anyone still looking?! Sorry for the length!)

    Wow!
    I love the then and now pictures. I have wanted Old Port for a while, will you tell me how it does for you? My Heaven On Earth never has button eyes like yours, very interesting. Mine is always cupped. How is its fragrance for you?
    I used to live in Dallas and miss it sometimes. We are having very cool weather, overcast skies, very unusual. Send us some heat:-)

    Your garden looks beautiful in both seasons. Its nice to have so much going on early to liven up springtime. The later shots especially are so very inviting as the garden looks green, happy, and full of bloom.

    Boy, I wonder how you just managed to catch two dogs walking so that it came out as one fat dog. I was chuckling over the fat white dog in the picture before I read the text and still chuckling after the explanation.

    Love that BABY FAURAX rose, very cheerful.

    Thanks, everyone for the kind words! Masha, I would gladly send you some of this heat; maybe my tolerance gets less as I get older but it just seems hotter than ever here. As far as Heaven on Earth's fragrance, well, there isn't much of one, is there.....such a beautiful flower should have a better scent!

    Rita, my garden is getting less green, happy and bloomy (is there such a word?!) because of the heat and lack of rain - sigh. I don't know how I managed to capture two dogs simultaneously so perfectly. They really do look like one dog!

    I loved all the pictures but it was the 'fattie dog' that made the post for me. I laughed so hard my dogs came running to see what was wrong with me. I will have to take a picture of my Aussies with the roses to show you. I have Memorial Day, glad I don't get thrips here. and Europeana which is priceless to own, it is reliable regardless of the weather. E. is one of my 'newbie' suggestion roses.

    le_jardin - I love my fountain also.......too bad it doesn't work. Or maybe it would if someone around here set it up :) My poor beautiful lady is so tired of looking down at yucky water pooling in the basin! I just know I'm going to walk by one day and she's going to have a look of total disgust on her face......

    Jeff - thanks for the compliments! I have so many new beds and new roses; I hope next year to be able to post my babies "all growed up"!

    susz52 - yes, the appearance of the little (singular) fattie dog in the picture was really strange! Those were my two Jack Russell's (sisters) but somehow they morphed into one dog!

    Happy Gardening!
