How tall does it grow, and when does it flower? When you say it pops up in the yard, is it seeding itself?

On first glance it could be Salvia coccinea.

Thanks so much for your quick response! I'm not sure on the dimensions or if it does, in fact, reseed (although, I'm sure that's what's happening in Grandma's yard), but I'm heading up to see my mom this weekend. I'll have her look at some images of S. coccinea and see if it's a match. I'll post again when I get more info. :)

I just wanted to report that my mom agrees her "mystery" sage has, indeed, been identified as S. coccinea! It's such a common sage, but having never grown it, I didn't make the connection.

This is an exact plant like my Salvia Coccinea 'Lady In Red'. Just thought I'd ID it a bit more... its a great plant! The only problem I have is neighborhood feral cats breaking it ALL THE TIME.
