What color are you looking for, how tall, sun or shade, good or poor soil, and what part or parts of the year do you want this to be?

Lots of species come to mind, but having these answers will narrow it for you a bit.

Hi Kermit,
My yard gets southern and south-western exposure in Sacramento.
Intense blue or purple is my color preference.
Not great soil (clay) but it can be amended
As far as height, I guess not too tall, maybe 2.5 -3 feet or can be shorter too.
My roses bloom early through late spring - it would be nice to have bloom period synced but I would consider later if that is when salvias normally bloom.
It's kind of between Lavender and Salvias for me at this point. I appreciate any feedback you can share. Thanks, Marlene

I want to amend my earlier post. I think I'd prefer a shorter, more tidy variety rather than the 2.5 size I mentioned initially.

Here are a few that fit all of your criteria - IF the soil is well drained:

Salvia africana-carulea
Salvia chamadryoides x 'Marine Blue'
Salvia coahuilensis
Salvia repens
Salvia semiatrata
Salvia x 'Savannah Blue'

For your climate, I'd look into Salvia nemorosa. You might try Salvia 'Mystic Spires' as well, but I'm not positive it will survive winter in your area. These Salvias would also be in sync with the bloom of your roses and appreciate the same water schedule.. Good luck
