Mine is just now showing the first bit of green. I'd cut them back anytime. They should be fine here in zone 7 - I grow lots of greggii and I get die-back, but not dead plants.

I've been wondering the same thing myself. Our weather reached a low of 3 degrees this winter, and it has been either snowing, raining, or not drying out for months. Mine are down to the ground now; the last leaves died in February. Greggii is new to my garden like you, although mine went in in June and grew and bloomed until frost. Someone who knows better than me could comment on your small leaves, but it sounds like your's just may have survived. Fortunately, cuttings of greggii root very easily, and I've got cuttings, and cuttings of cuttings ready to go.

Lastly, we marginal grower need to be careful about which cultivars we grow. We don't have the margin for error someone from say Texas has. Mine were a Navaho type bought at Lowes which may not be hardy in my climate: I'm expecting hardier types in the mail any day.

Well I'm encouraged by the responses. I'm going to cut down the "dead" looking branches and hope it grows.

Any advice on cuttings? I don't know how to create cuttings. Is there a website for this kind of information?
