Can we grow Metasequoia glyptostroboides in the southeast (Brunswick, GA, specifically)? Have always wondered, then recently saw a golden foliaged variety and I wondered again.
First one I ever saw was growing on the Auburn University campus, back in about 1968. It's still there and going strong. Brunswick shouldn't challenge it at all.
right next to Dinwiddie Hall on St. Charles Avenue here in New Orleans. I thought it was a cypress (it looks a lot like a cypress!) I suppose it was one of the first ones planted when the species was discovered; I don't think the thing has made any seeds (I saw no seedlings about, but the squirrels may have eaten the seeds.) It is as high as the five story buildings around it so the horrendous New Orleans heat is not hurting it any.
I've heard it said that Georgia and alabama are the best place in world outside China for the Dawn Redwood. I can't remeber actually seeing specimens in So. Georgia, however. There thoudands in No. Georgia.
