Hard to say for sure without a close-up of a flower and calyx. But it is surely "Purple Majesty", "Jean's Purple Passion", "Black Knight", or "Betsy's Purple".

These are all similar hybrids. What is the flowering period of your plant?

Thanks, Robin. It was only a little twig when I got it last fall, and has just started to bloom. The picture was taken 2 days ago.

I think it must be S. x "Purple Majesty" since I have never seen the others offered in TX.

That would be my guess as well. Betsy's Purple and Jean's Purple Passion are pretty new.

My Purple Majesty has never grow to such perfection. It always tended to floppiness and breakage. If it is PM it is the best example I've ever seen.

Ward, I think it is a combo of the time of year (early spring) and the location (coastal Texas). You might not recognize the same sages growing in New England to those growing in coastal California to those growing in North Carolina.

Rich is right, weather conditions make a lot of difference. Here in England, Purple Majesty blooms very late, usually just before a frost. However in a warm summer, it will flower at least a month earlier. Same applies to Jean and Black Knight. Incidentally I recently returned from a vacation in Buenos Aires, where Purple Majesty (or purple guaranitica as it is known there) blooms all year round and is spectacular.

That is a pretty one, looks like black and blue, which I love, but is a pretty purple!!

Have just seen this quite old item - it certainly looks like the plant I had as 'Purple Majesty', which I used to like as it bloomed in summer, before most of the other guaranitica types! So perhaps it wasn't the same as the one Robin has - although we have milder winters, guaraniticas are not usually very quick to get going in the spring here, since it takes a long time to really warm up. Good plant, anyway, & I only lost it due to being away for 6 months and unable to water.
