Hot Lips is unique amongst multicolored sages because the zone of white is variable and depends on growing conditions. The others are consistent and vary only in size and overall intensity of color. That's true everywhere I have witnessed Salvias blooming, or others have reported on.

As I have long known.... living in CA means nothing is sacred... including the consistent color of Salvias..... and Roses.

Nothing strange here yet, Westelle, but as you said, every day is an adventure in Cali gardens. :)

I'll have to look more closely at those blooms today...

Westele My "Hot lips" here in Texas starts totally white then as the flower ages turns Two tone then Coral. In the summer it is coral all the time. Come fall Back to a two tone.
Does yours produce seed? Mine is sterile which is unusual
for S microphylla here.

I haven't seen any "babies", so mine may be sterile too. I've tried to let you see my variations.

Thanks for the pics I don't know about the rest of the country. My "Hot Lips" does not do that. Some of my
greggii's do that when the weather takes a 30 degree
drop but no freezing temps.

My `Hot Lips' is solid red in flower right now, as it usually is for recently repotted plants breaking out in the spring, before it gets hot.
