Well, the salvia is totally eaten and I found the nasty insects, they've moved on to my tomato seedlings. They seem to be some sort of tiny fly or gnat that eat the leaves and stems and not the veins. The leaves look a bit like "lace" when the feeding is done. I've been squishing them with my fingers but the plants are so fragile I'd like find an organic control.

How's the saying go? One for the weather and one for the hoe, One for the bugs and one to grow!!
But it's frustrating anyway.

Mine were eaten up by earwigs. I replied to your tomato post. Since you've got damage on the salvias too, I'd guess the culprit on both is earwigs. Soysauce/oil traps will work.

Late last summer/early fall I found a great big juicy caterpillar inside one of the flowers of my gauranitica. I had never seen any on my plants before that.
