Yes, this is quite normal and is the reason you do not prune camellias, azaleas and the sort once you get into June. If you prune now you will be removing next years flowers.

As for camellias, I don't like to prune much except for the occasional long shoot or anything that makes it look a bit unkept. The best time is right after they get done flowering and send out new growth. Depending on what variety (early,late etc.,) this usually gives you up to around May or so. This also applies to Azaleas, it always makes me cringe when I see these so called landscapers hacking away in late Summer or Fall and then when Spring gets here they wonder where all the flowers are.

I'm banking on a regular winter peabee...and the other posters are right, never trim your azaleas or camellias after Memorial day, at leat that is what my grandmother always has told me! Camellias, depending on your species ( japonica, sassanqua or sinesis) flower from October to March or so...sassanquas and sinesis usually being "fall flowering" and japonicas generally being "winter" flowering.

Has anybody else noticed the camellia seed pods? They're much larger than usual and more plentiful.

Probablky because of the rain..peabee, i noticed that my camellia sinesis actually had one flower! The rest are nowhere near that, but this was on a part of th eplant that receives no sun. I checked all my camellias yesterday and they are budding like mad!

my neighbor wanted to get rid of her japanicus(tree-sized)and hacked off all the leaves except for one branch. can this species regrow shoots in a manner similar to crepe myrtle? i would like to try to transplant it to my yard.
