Like to know if the last two are the same plants under different names. Found this info in Betsy's salvia book.

Salvia guaranitica `Argentina Skies'
Salvia guaranitica `Black & Blue' - probably the form once caled S. melanocalyx
Salvia guaranitica `Blue Enigma - Europe only
Salvia guaranitica `Blue EnsignÂ
Salvia guaranitica `Omaha - variegated form of Costa Rica
Salvia guaranitica, Van Remsen form - has no stolons, very few tubers
Salvia guaranitica (Brazil) - the oldest form, also called S. ambigens
Salvia guaranitica (Costa Rica)
Salvia guaranitica x `Purple Majesty'
Salvia guaranitica x `Purple Splendour'

There is something strange about 'Argentine Skies'. A brilliant flowering Salvia...but it has huge tubers underground, could almost be considered as invasive..even in the UK. Is it possible that this is not actually a guaranitica? What we have known for years as S. guaranitica 'Black and Blue' is more likely a separate species....known in the USA as 'Costa Rican Blue' Possibly related to S. mexicana?

There are so many forms of S. guaranitica...I believe that it can cross with S. patens!

Several of the guaraniticas have the tubers you're talking about but not all. someday someone may decide to seperate them but for now they all fall under the name guaranitica.
As for the crossing, I wish someone could come up with a red flowering variety.
I'm just getting into Salvias, and I got a lot to learn but I just got a couple of good books on them and found some great online sources to help me get my collection going. Heck, I'm even redesigning all my beds to convert them over to Salvias.
I started out with a few Salvia guaranitica Kobalts (blue enigma?) and now I want them all. My wish list is huge but unfortunatly I have limited funds for this right now.
Anyway, It makes for a great hobby and a beautiful yard.
