I have been using rowcovers for years for tender plants in the gound and wall o'water for bigger plants. I have never used any of them for potted plants, since I do not know how the roots of tender plants would survive freeze in clay pots.

You're right. I don't know what I was thinking of. I guess putting the pots near walls of the house and putting a light covering would probaly help since it doesn't freeze here that often.

Well, I have been thinking about this. Since there is hard freeze for only several times in a winter and usually last only for 1-3 days, maybe putting pine straw around the pot or thick blanket would do the trick. And since there are several row covers available (some are double woven and thicker) they could protect the foliage - I used them with good success to protect already flowering fruit trees when a sudden late frost/freeze hit us.

I gather all the potted plants I want to winter over in one protected spot setting them close together next to each other. Then I purchase enough straw bales at the feed store to box in the pots placing them two bales high. Over the top Remay is then secured down with bricks or boards. This makes a cozy cold frame which should winter most of your plants well. Of course, the straw ends up as mulch or on the compost pile next spring.
