Spent blooms--hard to tell?

I am new to salvias and I'm having a hard time telling what is new and ready to bloom and what has already bloomed. I have quite a few stems that have just the blooms at the tip top of the stem and thinking that they are the spent ones and then some that have blooms at the bottom part of the stem and thinking they are the new ones. Does this question make any sense to you? I want to keep them deadheaded but don't want to mistake just getting ready to bloom stems for already bloomed and just about spent blooms. Any tell tail signs? BTW-I'm talking about the Caradonna, Blue Hill and May night salvias if that helps at all.
