If it's too woody at the bottom I'd cut it up to somewhere softer, then stick it in some potting soil and keep dampish in a lightly shaded area. Oh yah, warmth helps.

Ok thanks. How can I tell if it's rooting?

Ummmmm... I just keep them in shade until they look like they've gotten over being cut off and transplanted; then I move them into a semi-shaded area. When they actually start to put on new growth you can figure they've started a root system. I then transplant them into 1 gal. pots to get bigger and develope a better root system. I plant them out in the Fall here in CA.
