when to harvest seeds?

i am pretty new to gardening and have never tried to harvest seeds from my plants before. my question is: when is it best to harvest seeds? i have a Baptisia australis (Blue false indigo) in my yard and met someone who would like to try to grow some. i live in an area with pretty cold winters and lots of snow, so right now, it is buried. are the pods on the plant any good anymore? do i need to wait until the next batch of seed pods develop before i give them away? or will these still work? any help is much appreciated!

Hi Sharon,
The seeds are still good if you find some. They will germinate in the spring. So as soon as you can get to them, pot some up outside while it is still cold, and they will sprout once the temps are right in the spring.
It is of course best to pick them in the fall for this plant. Different plant seeds need to be picked at different times. Some seed stay with the plant for a long time like baptisia. Others have very fast seed dispersal.
