Lime in the soil? Is that just to make it alkaline or is there something in the lime that it needs?

You mean the mineral and not the fruit right? Just clarifying. I wish they had come up with another name for one or the other because it still confuses me.

Please be careful adding things like lime to your potting soils. Lime makes the soil alkaline (opposite of acidic). If you don't know what you are doing, it is best to rely on pre-bagged soils formulated for cactus. All Sansevieria do very well in a neutral soil (pH7 is neutral); excellent drainage is imperative.

My S. 'Moonshine' gets indirect sun all day. Its doing fine. I live in a hot inland valley which is considered a desert, I have sandy fast draining soil even if it rains 30" in a year or more, no damage. Of course I mean the mineral Agrig. minerals, why in the world would you think otherwise, I also use Agrig. Kelp, Charcoal, etc.

Oddly enough, Alan Butler (big Sansevieria expert with a nursery here in Italy and wonderful plants) counseled me to fertilize with a liquid fertilizer for acid plants. I have a lot of confusion about ph, and about the relationship between ph and soil type. I've been experimenting with Sans for two and a half year now, have lost one variety (S. ballyi, too much water in a cool spell, I think) and kept another twenty alive, most of them putting on some growth, though few growing rapidly. I know I could be doing a lot better, but could also be doing a lot worse. My plants have generally done well this summer, under a wisteria pergola in extremely hot and dry weather, with slow release fertilizer and frequent watering. I think they like the heat, and some have done well in more sun than I would have thought desirable. (My husband put a baby 'Hahnii' in a sunny spot with some agaves, and it looked surprisingly healthy.) I have a long way to go before I'll know what I'm doing. I plan on getting another S. ballyi.
