Salvia Caradonna

I bought 5 beautiful Salvia Cardonna's 3 weeks ago and they're look dead already. The leaves are so brown it looks as if someone literally "torched" them. We've been getting lots of rain, they're in clay soil and I found out my husband planted them in potting soil. Which do you think killed them? All the above? Should I dig them up and replant? Please help!
