How does Salvia darcyi grow in the USA? In the UK it is a great plant, usually hardy as long as good winter drainage is provided. I have collected seed, though without hummers, it is odd that it does get pollinated. Plants from seed seem to be variable....some have much larger flowers, others have much darker-coloured flowers...but of course this could be caused by differing soil conditions, and sunshine intensity....yes, even in England, from time to time!
Darcyi seems to have underground rhizomes, and will often re-appear in spring some distance from the original plant, S. uliginosa does this also.
I absolutely love S. darcyi...with a BIG exception re its extreme stickiness. It will attach itself to its neighbours, and separating them can easily cause stems to be brokeen. (Salvia squalens is even worse.)
It is in flower now, and by the end of August it will be fabulous. I grow it in a huge clump, along with S. uliginosa, S. 'Indigo Spires', and a white Gaura...it is a picture!
It does need a bit of staking, to prevent it getting floppy.
Also known as S. oresbia.....don't know which name is correct!
