My trellises-for Jean from WI (heavy pics)

Hi Jean,

You asked how my trellises were made. Actually, I get this question a lot from other GW users, too. Anyway, I found some pics taken early in the season - around April 9th and in June of this year, that shows my trellises before the roses bloom and after with the roses in bloom. By the way, the trellises are made of pressure treated wood which we stained. The posts are 2x2 in size and were sunk into cement (rocks were added to stabilize them). All the materials were purchased at Home Depot. Hope this helps and isn't confusing! Let me know if you have any ?s.

Unfortunately, I don't have a wide shot of this! The closest pic would be this one:

I can tell you that on Trellis 3, on the left side, I have Clematis Etoile Violette growing. I'm adding Rose, Ghislaine de FÃ©ligonde(a yellow climber) in the Fall. On the right side of Trellis 3, I just planted Rose, John Davis last Fall along with Clematis, Huldine. So, this area is still getting developed. That's probably why I can't find a picture of it.

Trellis 4 has John Cabot growing on it along with Clematis, Jackmanii.

I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. This has taught me that I have to try and take better pictures using the same angles for comparison shots. Well, there's always next year!

That is SUBERB! It is amazing to see the transformation from April to May. In my part of the world, there is always something green since we don't get the frigid temperatures.

Is that a deck in the 3rd and 4th pictures? I would love to have those roses so close to my deck. Your trellises are wonderful and so gorgeous with the blooms on them. Wish my husband liked to build garden structures.

Thanks again for the kind words. I'm sure that DHs everywhere are going to hate me after they see these pics 'cause now they're going to have to build the trellises - or pay someone else to do it! :-)

Anyway, Carla, Pics #8, 9, and 10, is where you can see our deck. I'll have to remember to take a better "Before" pic of that come April. I'm glad you enjoyed my pictures.

I am saving all the pic. of your trellises for showing them to my husband. We where planning to "dress-up" west side of the garage that faces to the pool deck.
I see a green house on the back of two last pictures.... would you tell me how you like it, size who is the manufacturer.

Fantastic! wow! I planted a lot of climbers along the walls without really paying attention to the trellises and am paying for the mistake now. I have weak floppy supports that fall over in high wind and rain. Next spring, I will try to something like in your pictures. That looks like a lot of dedication and hardwork! congrats and thanks for the pics...

Sorry its taking me awhile to get back to you. Anyway, my greenhouse is 12' x 22' and the manufacturer is Florian Greenhouses. We hired someone to build the brick base and someone else to build the greenhouse itself. Hope this helps!

I have been out looking at the materials to make the trellis. Bellarosa, did you purchase the lattice already framed out or did you frame it out? I finally found some that can be purchased already framed out but it sure is pricey.

Hi Jean,
I'm not to sure what you mean by if the lattice was framed out. I'm assuming that you are asking if the lattice work was pre-made and if that's your question, then the answer is yes. We didn't have to make the lattice. We simply nailed them to the trellis frames. We did have to cut the lattice work to size and paint them before nailing them down.

We are finally getting a trellis made in the next couple of weeks! Final question...I hope. Do the 2X2 posts (that the frame is attached to) go all the way up (the full height of the lattice work frame), or only a portion of the way up? It's hard to tell from the photos. Also, is the frame made from 1X4s? Thanks for sharing! Jean

Bellarosa, This is absolute proof positive that gorgeous rose beauty can be had no matter how cold your zone is!!!! I LOVE IT ALL!!!! Thank you for this wonderful post! So many people recommended John Davis to me this year as a climber to use in zone 4. Now I know that it will look great against my grey fence!!! AND John Cabot looks so fabulous beside it, I may have to add him as well!!! Thank you, AGAIN!!!

p.s. Were the posts only 2x2? They look so much larger in the photos... Like 4x4 maybe? Forgive that builder in me. I already have my fence built, so I really don't know why I need to know that. :)
