i had never heard of it untill today but i was reading that that is one way to store and (stratify?) liatris seeds. keep them mixed with damp sand in a bag for a month or two, or longer then spread in flats when you are ready for them to start.

Jeanne, I've moist stored seeds that need an extended warm moist period before a cold moist period by putting them in a tiny zip lock (1x2") with a scant 1/2 tsp of sterile moist vermiculite (seeds don't need to be fully covered, just exposed to moisture) and about 3 additional drops of hydrogen peroxide. And, I've shipped them to friends that way...they can then be sown, vermiculite and all at the appropriate time.

Epimedium, hellebore, aconitum, saruma, iris to name a few.
