I have had better success with S.microphylla in Zone 9
gardens than with S.greggii.S. microphylla "Hot lips"might be one for youto try. Being floriferousness,bloom season and longevity can vary from cultivar to cultivar.I have both in my garden
as well as hybrids some bloom early some late. Which state
are you in? This makes a big difference in rain fall,soils
and temperature ranges ie Florida,Texas and California. Also
the microphylla's collected from lower altitudes will perform better than the more higher altitude forms.

I give S. microphylla the edge in L.A. I don't find either to be as full-sun, drought-tolerant as S. clevelandii,S. leucophylla or S. apiana, so they either need some shade or more frequent watering here.
