Hardy geranium seeds are inside little cases at the base of where the flower used to be. They encircle the long protrusion that develops after the flower dies. This is where the name stork's bill for geranium comes from.
When the seeds are ripening the protrusion will start to turn dark. Then the seed cases will start to darken. This is the time to collect them. You must be careful when removing them. Hold a bag/container around them. When the seeds are ripe. The cases holding the seeds spring away from the protrusion and they toss the seeds out like a catapult.
On the google pictures link below, the first picture show unripe seeds. The second picture shows after the seeds are catapulted. The fifth picture over show seeds ripe about ready to catapult.
