Indigo Spires

Okay... another seed question.... I was very cocky and gave away all my salvia cuttings, thinking myself oh so good at rooting... then all my next crop of Indigo Spires cuttings just died...:o( It's in full bloom now, recovering from my cuttings, will it grow true from seed, or should I cut off a flowering spire, cut the flower and try to root it? I am having propagation phobia after the last failures. P.S. I was rooting them in a fish tank (for humidity) and rooting them in perlite.

Hello Heathen,

The indigo spires doesnt have viable seed. It is a sterile hybrid (so I read). So get propagating.
Ahh the challenges in life we must face by being cocky (been there done that )

Thank you Annette for your bad news! :o) Do you happen to know the best temps for rooting this salvia? The first time I had the success was during our summer, and the temps were in the 100's F/37ÂºC and now, we are having a short week of say temps around 35ÂºC (low to mid 90's) but the nights are cold.

No I have no idea I think that spring & summer are the best time to propagaTE, Maybe just put in pot & put a cut cola bottle over top at least that way the humidity is constant.The higher humidity the quicker the cutting roots, here where I am cuttings are rooting in a week and it is only spring what will summer bring :0)

Ingido Spires is indeed a sterile hybrid and does not set seed. Cuttings are easily propagated. In the UK it regularly survives underground to 20 degrees F., provided it does not get waterlogged.
