Broccoli seeds

My broccoli went to seed even before it produce much of a head. Which is weird because it's only been in the 70's here and they are in partial shade. I have a few questions:

1. Why do you think they are going to seed? Can't be the heat

2. Can I save the seed to plant next year or will this seed produce the same effect (basically the offspring will react like this plant did?

3. If it's not a good idea to save the seeds, can't I just save them all to put in my sprouter, or are the sprout a different kind of broccoli.

BTW, this was just a standard green sprouting calabrese

Thanks everyone

Dave
