Hi..new to gardening and someone gave me 4 salvia chiapensis. I can t seem to find much info on them. Can anyone tell me if it should be hardy in atlanta zone7. And how big it gets and if I can get by with maybe 4-5 hot hours of sun...thanks
Salvia chiapensis is a mexican sage, it grows 1.5 - 2ft. only in frost free zones can this salvia survive year round in the ground (according to Betty Clebsch's New book of Salvias), where I am the salvia will tolerate some shade so I assume it is not humid where you are so the 4-5 hours of sun should be fine, hope this helps.
Hi. Mine is about 3ft high. I get frost here and it survives, lots of leaf burn but spring prune takes care of the mess. It sits in full summer sun with no problem. It's been flowering straight for a whole year now, not even the cold or frost stopped it though it does flower better in summer. I doubt your humidity will bother it. Hope that helps. Cait
Thanks both of you..I put it in today so I'll see how it does...Annette..I guess you havent been to atlanta in july and august...its humid..thanks again
It was my favorite new plant last year. Annette is right, I read that they come from a province in Mexico called Chiapas. The habitat ia a "cloud forest". So they should like your humidity.
I have had mine for several years in San Diego....mine is full sun and gets some leaf burn in the summer...I just gave mine some iron to help green it up....saw some in shade at San Juan Capistrano and were deep green and blooming....blooms all year, but mainly in spring...budworms love it....BT may work..havent had luck in fighting the worms.
