I've bought some commercially and received quite a few in trades, they've always sent me the disk shaped with the dark center part.

Thanks, new! Fortunately, I saved the little disks, just in case. Guess I can toss the "sticks."

check out this site for seed info -- under the link for seeds&seed pods there is a great chart of the pods, seeds, and seedling ID photos all listed under the name (latin genus).

Disks! Aren't they fun to gather? I think they look like backbone disks! The regular Ratibida - the plain yellow are more petite versions.

I have enjoyed them, bakemom, and plan to gather more seeds to have lots more plants next year and for trades. They are fun to gather, and easy, too, now that I know which part to save! One of the reasons I requested them in a newbie SASBE packet is that in so many posts last fall and winter, you sang of their virtue. Now I understand. I had them with Gaillardia, Indian blanket, and the combination was quite nice. I've seen photos of the solid yellow ones and they are pretty, too.
