One of the other names for balsam is "Touch-Me-Not" -- when the seeds are ready the pods explode! Which can make them a little difficult to collect.

On mine the pods tend to turn a little tannish, and the "seam" seems more pronounced when they're ripe. I cup my hand around the pod and tug very gently. If they're ready, the pod will explode in my hand, and it's easy to dump the dark brown round seeds in a bowl to dry thoroughly.
