Sansevieria require larger pots, as you can see. I would plant both together. New rhizomes tend to be at least 12" long and 1-2" thick. My collection is almost completely in 8" (20 cm) pots minimum.

Cleaning is not necessary; you could only hurt the roots.

I agree wiht Helli, Just pot it up with well draining soil and let go. You could always pot up bigger latter. All my sans are Trifasciata so don't know about this type. Mine like to be pot bound. Good luck. Also why buy so late into winter?? Taking a chance.
