I'm sorry, it's black cohosh and I should have listed it. This is one plant I just never seem to connect
with the common name when I think about it.

I think you are too late to sow them this year. My reference materials all say they should be sown at the height of summer, as the seeds need heat to germinate. Very often the seeds are not viable.

The more common way to propagate Black cohosh is by division.

It never hurts to try. I would let them fall by themselves, but catch them. And I guess you could plant some and save some for next year.

Janie, Thanks so much for your input. After I looked it up to see what the common name is I found it listed someplace else as bugbane.
Anyway, yesterday I found one of the seeds that had turned brown and opened it and there are definitely tiny little black seeds inside.
The ones that are still green do not have those. I don't see how they could be sown at the height of summer unless they mean as soon
as I harvest them. I was really saving them to add to my exchange list but guess I may just skip it. Thanks again. You've been a big help.
