Awesome August

What an outstanding summer we've had up here in the great PNW. As August draws to an end, my garden shows few signs of slowing down. Here are a few shots from this AM.....

Glad to hear your garden is still going strong
    boxofrox!
Very nice roses/flowers you have in your garden! It's always a treat to see what type of pics you will have next...LOL

Great shots! I love the vibrant colors in the first pictures. What is that behind Living Easy, a coleus? I can't believe they can grow together...

Ginger Syllabub is beautiful. How is fragrance?
    Thank for posting.

OUTSTANDING photography and your roses are just something else, I am really impressed with ROYAL GOLD.
    THANKS for posting

Simply marvelous!! Just gorgeous roses and photography!!

    Thanks guys :-)

Masha, that is Magilla perilla. It's like a giant coleus that loves full sun. I do the pots on the wall with it to contrast the Easy which is planted at the base of the wall. Ginger has a very nice somewhat spicy fragrance, I like it a lot. I planted it on the fence above the end of the wall with the other yellow climber and put a Dream Come True between them. The swing points towards the wall with the Easy's straight ahead and the new ones to the right.

borofrox, somehow I can't see the signs that your garden is slowing down :-)! But what I can see is that a lot of your photos have already a very autumn-ish atmosphere, very lovely! Great photography, by the way!

Usually I am not very much into single flowered roses (just a matter of personal taste), but I have to say, that your photo brings out very well the beauty of the Lyda rose. She is just toughing in her simplicity.

Thanks for posting this photo thread!

Wonderful roses, Boxofrox! I am so jealous that you've got Lady Emma Hamilton! I tried so hard to order her even in early Spring 2009 but there were no! LEH left! not online and not in my local nursery. How in the heck! were you able to get her! You'll have to let me know how tall she grows. I am thinking she will be a shorter? rose bush?

Lyda Rose is stunning and I am really liking your new rose additions too!

    Why thank you, OGD :-)

I only have two singles (unless you count Flutterbye which probably qualifies) and I am very fond of both. Lyda is one that never ceases to please, she flushes all summer and is quite pleasantly fragrant as well.

    KG, What can I say, I stopped....I found...I purchased ;-)

She was planted along with the Falstaff in the memory garden in front of Abe and the two redheads, The Dark Lady and LD Braithwaite. I just love her already :-) She's got a brand new bloom which just opened this eve and it's quite a bit darker. Maybe I'll try to capture in the AM.

Thanks for the introduction to 'Ginger Sylabub'.

    Subtle beautiful blend of colors.

    I need this one!

Boro, oh wow..I love Royal Gold. Where did you get it?

Ginger Syllabub is not an Austin... it is from Harkness (but looks like an Austin...)

Love your picture of Lyda Rose...

Sorry about that deco, you're right it is an aussie lookin Harkness :-)

Zyp, I tripped across it at your next door neighbors ;-) I chose it to bring out the yellow center of the newly opened Gingers plus everything in that section blooms yellow and orange. I have a bright orange Gibraltar azalea, a yellow rhody, and I'm transplanting all my orange dahlias there in the spring.

irisgal, it's a real keeper. As deco said it is very Austin like and quite fragrant. I'm going to grow it toward the Royal Gold on one side and a Mojave firethorn on the other. I'm hoping it turns out as nice as I imagine :-)

    Really fantastic photos Boxofrox !
Thanks for showing me how White Eden looks. Its called Blushing Pierre de Ronsard here in Australia. I planted one in my garden a few weeks ago.

    Thanks Boro. Wonderful!

    rosemeadow,

Thanks and you're welcome. White Eden has performed unbelievably for me and has the longest lasting blooms by far of all my roses. It's not uncommon to get 3+ weeks out of each bloom. Mine is only in it's second year and yet it exceeds my expectations :-) Just for you my dear, here are my favorite pics of her I've posted earlier from this year...........

Wow, Boxofrox I love LEH! Lady Emma Hamilton is as gorgeous in your garden as I imagine her at her best form. Lady Emma Hamilton is the only David Austin rose that I'll be growing in my garden. So it will be interesting to see if she sticks out from all my other roses, LOL! so even a gorgeous rose like her has to deal with my lopsided gardener ways, haha! I am especially! loving the last photo dahlias too! whoo-hoo!

I here ya on the lady, she's a real looker and a fine addition to that bed. I'm thinking it's complete now....3 Abraham Darby, a Dark Lady, a Lady Emma Hamilton, an LD Braithwaite, a Falstaff, a Brandy, a Betty Boop, a Sexy Rexy, and a rugosa Hansa. Combine that with a couple of sedum Suzie, a couple of sedum Autumn Charm, and a couple of spiraea Magic Carpet and my job there is done :-)

I got a solution for your lopsidedness....do the first part like you always do and do the second part with a mirror ;-)

Those dahlias on both sides are jammin, like a half dozen each of the lavendar and yellow. Soon as they're all open I'll get another shot.

You have some very respectable flowers there. I sure like my Lady Emma Hamilton also. She has been blooming on and off all summer, but her bush doesn't get real large, at least for me. Your dahlia and rose bouquets are nice also. I always like to look.

Boxofrox, I absolutely adore your White Eden photoghraps and I am now so excitedly looking forward to seeing it grow and mature here in my garden. On the other side of my sheepyard mesh archway is another new, new release climber called Pride of Venus. I hope white and lemon will look good near each other. Whats the fragrance of your White Eden like ?
I have two Pierre de Ronsards ( Eden ) that I grew from cuttings, its such a wonderful rose.
Thankyou very, very much for posting your surperb photos of White Eden.

White Eden has a lot of things going for it but fragrance is not one of them. I have 4 Austins in close proximity so not that much of an issue for me although when push comes to shove with all things being equal, I wish she smelled as good as she looks :-)

    I'm speechless------love the pic--in large company!!!

    Florence

Wow! Those are all some beautiful photos of beautiful blooms!! I especially like the dahlias! And that Magilla Perilla... how does it do for you? We got some in a couple yrs ago, and it was supposed to be a "tender" perennial. Didn't survive our winter. Guess they're just like the coleus. We have to use them as annuals. Too bad, because they're very interesting plants. I love plants that have colorful foliage.

Thanks Florence, White Eden is a real winner in my book. I think she has one really nice flush left in her for this her second year. I couldn't be more pleased.

Thanks Beth, boy my dahlias are going gangbusters right now. My wife has a baby shower tomorrow and they have requested she come with one of my bouquets in tow so I'm going to cut a huge one for her.

Yes, the Magilla is pretty much an annual here as well but for about 6 bucks a pop, what a lot of bang. I do the three pots on the wall and one on the deck every year. The one on the deck I usually do three different colored million bells trailing along with wand flowers and the like.

This is my Sunday AM harvest.....the one on the left is for a baby shower, the one on the right is for the kitchen table and the dahlias and Oklahomas are for staying right where they are :-)

Boxofrox, you are truly THE ROSE MASTER your Austin's are just UNDESCRIBLE. I just set back in awe at each and every picture and your photography is just AWESOME. Thanks for posting and PLEASE awe me some more.
    Harold

    Harold,

Thank you so much but I am no master, I am just beginning my ascent up the learning curve when it comes to roses. When it comes to pushing the point and shoot button, sometimes I get it and sometimes I don't. But I sure do enjoy trying to get better on both counts ;-)

MOST impressive!!!! Your photography is amazing!!!! Your roses are inspirational!!! There are just so many lovely roses you posted that I can't comment on them. I'm just in awe!!

    Carol

Boxofrox, I am so glad Candadian Rose revisited your thread so we can re-enjoy! and I loved the Eden after Eden you did for Rosemeadow too! Well when LEH matures, you will have to do a LEH after LEH for me to give to her on my Butterfly Bouquet Get-Well Wishes o.k? pretty pleeeeease?

About your lopsided formula, LOL! It wouldn't work because then I'd have Double the Lopsidedness, hahahaha! enough to give people Double vision, visual headache, hahahahahaha!

Yeah but Double Delight would be somewhat quadravisionesque ;-) ;-)

Boxofrox, LOL! you are the King of both roses, abbreviations and hilarious puns and humor! You would make Shel Silverstein (poet of "Where the Sidewalk Ends", "Light in the Attic") make a run for his money, LOL, LOL! Anyway, I am betting that by the time everyone's roses start sleeping in the Fall, your garden will still! be doing spectacular Fireworks' blooms! Not to mention I bet you will have tons of berries for winter too, I bet!Boxofrox, do you ever let your gorgeous Darlow's Enigma grow rose hips, by the way? I heard the term rose hips from Scardan, and this concept really intrigues me. Rose hips/berries are very attractive and colorful too! Another confusing part is that Darlow's Enigma is classified as a rambler, but doesn't this mean that it will be a once-bloomer? But then online it's described as continually in bloom? This would be a perfect combination if Darlow's was indeed a continual bloomer and then! I could leave it be near the end of fall so that there would be berries to feed the birds with... hmmmmmm.....

    KG,

You make me smile :-) SS has got nothing on BOR !!! This coming from a would be poet who once penned the words...Age is a cage in the zoo of your mind.

My DE has been and continues to bloom all summer long. I simply shape it when it's done. Depending on weather, my garden probably blooms 10 months a year and the other two, I have colorful berries. I have a number of firethorns, a Profusion beautyberry that is metallic lilac along with crabapples and flowering quince. Once the berries stop I have camelias, daphnes, edgeworthias, sarcococcas and the like that sometimes are here by Christmas. Then early spring starts all the acid lovers which help me bridge the gap to the roses, peonies, and hydrangeas again. Life sure has a lovely cycle, eh?

Whoo-hoo, I just knew it! your winter garden everyone will be droooooooling over during the bleak-and-the-drab months like a bunch of starved bluebirds and cardinals gathering to stare at your visual feast! And I will be one fat-and-fluffy-well-fed stalker, stealing more photo pics of your berry-filled garden. Camelias? toooooooo, whoo-hoo! whoo-hoo! I can't wait! hurray!

Boxofrox - I follow the troup of fans - your photos and flowers are *amazing*!!

May I ask, what do you feed the roses? I hope it's not inappropriate to ask in this forum... but I sure do wish my roses had that color and abundance!

    Thanks for sharing!

Hi Tulip, thank you so much. I'm still learning when it comes to roses and quite honestly until recently have been focusing more on finishing my garden than perfecting my rose care techniques. I don't really spray or do the teas or anything quite so specialized as all that. Beginning last year I started using Terosa on all my roses and perennials. I'm afraid that's all they get so I don't know if it because or inspite of the Terosa ;-) That's it, that's all I do other than water well and use the same planting mix everytime. Oh and of course I love up on em all the time :-)
