Hi Taterbug,

The seeds are located in the calyx, which is the cup like thing with pointy ends at the base of the flower. (Ive attached a good pic that shows the calyx of a Salvia lyrata flower. All salvias have calyxes like this.) The flower will drop, and the calyx will remain. The seeds are ready when the calyx has become dry, papery and light brown. There will be anywhere from 1 to 4 dark gray small oval seeds inside. Seeds will only form if the flower has been pollinated. If the flower hasn't been pollinated, the calyx won't get papery and will drop off around the same time as the flower. Also, the seeds drop out of the calyx pretty quickly when they are ready, so I make a practice of searching my bush daily during this time of year.

Hi Susan and Taterbug, I have two very large mexican sage plants and have searched for the seeds like crazy. I have several varieties of salvia/sage plants (some of my fav's), so I am familiar with the seed part of the plant. However said, my MS won't produce seeds. I have a huge wild flower garden with many, species of butterflies, hummers, and bees that are just all over the garden. I am curious to know why they won't go to seed if everything else around this plants are constantly being dead headed due to over seeding. I noticed that with my black and blue salvia as well. I realize I cut in on your question Taterbug, but I had the same problem and am hoping for miracle help.

I cut some of the blooming "spikes" off a few days ago, and place them in a plate. Now in the plate are tiny (and I mean tiny) little seeds. Well, I assume they are seeds. They are about the size of moss ross seeds. They look nothing like Salvia Greggii seeds. Am I correct in my assumption? Elisabeth
