I've started a container garden in front of my apartment. My future MIL has been supportive and pleasantly surprised by how it's going but has continually cautioned me about growing both squash and melons. First cautions about cross pollination causing weird hybrids. I set that to rest by assuring her that I have no intention of saving seeds for next year. This visit she said that they will yield fruits that taste like a whole lot of nothing.

Is this something I should really be concerned about? Has someone grown melons and squash in close proximity- their pots are about 2 ft apart. I would like my squash to taste like squash and for my midget melons to taste like melons. The squash have exploded so I'd be pulling out the slow growing melons but would be really sad. Any advice?
