The evergreen shrubs recommended are Mahonia aquifolium and Elaeagnus x ebbingei.

I have an eleagnus that gets 3 or 4 hours of direct sun a day. It isn't happy, and gets very leggy and top heavy. Without adequate light, these are not attractive plants. Your best bet may be nandina, Japanese ligustrum, or Japanese auralia.

If elaeagnus, nandina or ligustrum get a chance to flower, they will produce fruit - not a good idea since all 3 are generally considered invasive plants (depending on where you are).

Consider Aucuba japonica instead.

I don't think nandina would get 6' tall in full shade. I have nandina in full shade under a large oak tree. The same bushes that grow 5' tall elsewhere are less than 2' in shade.

You need to cut the flowers/berries off so birds don't spread them elsewhere. Some hybrid varieties do not make berries.

That's interesting, rabbit. I was just going by what does best on my place with the least light. I don't guess any of it is in "total" shade. I've got some that gets only a little morning light though that is a good 8 ft. tall. You sure you're referring to the same cultivars? I think I've got 6 or 7 different types on my place, and a couple would be difficult to distinguish from the "standard" variety, except that they are shorter. I've had very few stray nandina to deal with, but they do "walk."

I vote for Aucuba also. There's many of these plants growing around our house and they have been thriving on neglect, dry shade and next to zero sun in both containers and in the ground. Perfect plants!
