It could be freeze damage from last February. Mine do that
and have even froze back to the roots here in N.Ala. They do regrow when that happens.

I don't think it is related to cold. Never have seen them freeze back to their roots here even in years when temps approach zonal minimums (0 F.). They do appreciate some shade though (winter and summer), somewhat shaded they will look much better and not nearly suffer as much in winter. But I think something else is going on with your plant. Can you post a picture? Good luck!

I have made picture of the damage and resized it to smaller size less then 64KB but I can't figure out how to post the picture.

Aucubas are prone to a number of fungal issues. In your area, I'd suspect southern blight, Sclerotium rolfsii. There are various products registered for this pathogen. You might want to take a sample of the dead/damaged stems to your local extension office for diagnosis and control options.
